I was there that night that they broke into his home and pulled him through the window
And drug him across town past the library, it's a long way there
And as they kicked him, as they mocked him, as they beat him
I brought him a daisy to plant in the wounds they had made
And they were dressed in the white sheets with the crosses burning and ah, stupid business
As they drug him, as they dragged him past the old clock tower
And near that new boxing ring where the men and demons fight
And I gave him a chance to become one of us
But of course, he would refuse because of that thing called dignity
And we have not that divisiveness business
So we lynched him and beat him till death
