Icon

Brad Edwards

Sideways glimpses from a distance
Admired from afar
Traffic soothing constant heartbeat
The only light from stars
The sunset burned our eyes
But if you waited it would turn sublime
Hemmed in by the waves of fields
Catch the salt-air breeze
Suspended in our solitude
By lines of guard-rail trees
It glittered like a prize
The centre of our universe at night
For legendary nights on end
The gates we opened wide
Strangers, lovers, friends descended
To try on others' lives
Performing all the time
Crowds are easier than eye-to-eye
Ghosts are all that remain now
Dreams like columns fell
Where once an icon stood so tall
Now it's broken like a spell
They left as they'd arrived
Unaware that night a city died
Shimmering pools and pulsing lights
The ocean below, consumed by the night
The parties we held
Rivers of wine
Pleasure and sin and primal cries
Promises made
Arms open wide
Deals would be done just as the money went dry
Stole what they could, escaped with their lives
Never to tell…
Palace on fire
