Tricksters

Judith Bingham

"Tutti: Hwæt! A dream came to me at deep midnight
When humankind kept their beds
The dream of dreams! We shall declare it

The Earth Maker: Since the beginning of time, I, am the Earth Maker
Floating on infinite waters, creating the World
I am alone and now theWorld is complete
Beautiful, harmonious.
What is that unharmonious noise?

Coyote: It is I, Coyote. I'm here to help you finish the World

Earth Maker: It is finished, actually

Coyote: Do you have singing?

Earth Maker: Singing? What is that?

Coyote: We can sing the world into creation, you and I
And I can add a few things of my own: death, war and suffering!

Coyote: Now there is only one thing missing

Tutti:What?

Coyote: Fire! People will need it - and I know where I can get it
At the top of a beautiful mountain a beautiful faraway mountain
There live three creatures the Fire Beings!

Coyote: I can creep to the top of the mountain
Tutti: Creep down low to the top of the mountain

Coyote: And when they are sleeping, sleeping and dreaming
I can Steal some fire, and creep down the mountain
Creep right down the faraway mountain and -

Loki: Please - stop! Stop! This is my story that fox has stolen my story

Tutti: Who are you?

Loki: Who am I? Why, I am Loki, God of Mischief,
Shapeshifter, brother of Thor and son of Farbauti, god of wildfires.

Coyote: This man is a trickster, Earth-Maker, don't trust him!
Coyote is your friend! Loki: I got the secret of fire from an eagle

Tutti: He got the secret of fire from an eagle,

Loki:The Eagle flew down and gave me the secret

Tutti: A great big brown Icelandic eagle

Loki: Three sisters, keep guard o'er the secret

Tutti: What are their names?

Loki: The first one's Eyjafjallajökull
The second one's Bárðarbunga, and the third one's

Kwaku Anansa: Never mind the third one!

Tutti: Forget the other sister!
Kwaku Anansa: Why would you go all that way, when I have fire, here, in my bag

Tutti: What? How?

Kwaku Anansa: I'll let the Earth Maker tell you

Earth Maker: Oh hello, Anansa, I didn't see you there!

Kwaku Anansa: Yes, my name is Kwaku Anansa I am also a shape-shifter
Most of the time I am a giant Spider!

Moon Hare: But you look much nicer like that!

Tutti:Yes!

Kwaku Anansa: You're looking in the wrong place for fire, it's easy to get from the sun

Tutti: Not right now it's so dark!

Kwaku Anansa: I made a bet with the Earth Maker that I could steal the sun and the moon, and in return he would give me all his stories
When the Sun came down to the water's edge I stole his reflection, and the Sun chased it into my bag!

Coyote: Did the Moon do the same?

Kwaku Anansa: Yes!

Earth Maker: Put the light back in the sky, spider, you have won your bet

Tutti: The Moon is rising!

Coyote: Who's that, dancing and singing on the Moon?

Moon Hare: I'm the is the Moon Hare, I lives on the Moon

Earth Maker:You can hear him singing

Tutti: Beautiful, beautiful!

Moon Hare: Let us all tell stories and sing songs
The same moon will shine on us, wherever we are. Whether the snow falls
Whether the crow caws
Whether the coyote howls
Let us all tell stories and sing songs"
