There's a Man

Steve Tilston

There's a man on a mountain, and he's searching and he's counting.
All the lambs that are left and are lost.
The devotion outweighs the cost.
Once I overheard him say,
no matter what time, night or day.
He can hear them calling from miles away.

There's a man out on the ocean, he rolls easy with each motion.
He knows how his boat will behave.
He is lord of the shoals and the waves.
I spied him drinking at the bar.
Like a fish who'd sunk too far.
Then he staggered out cursing the moon and the stars.

There's a man on the stairs and he's climbing, where no one dares.
He faces the smoke and the flame.
If he falters he faces the blame.
Once I saw his smoke- black face.
The tracks of tears had made a trace.
There's not enough money to take his place.
