Cowboy Christmas Ball / Polka Medley

Michael Martin Murphey

Way out in West Texas, where the Clearfolk waters flow,
Where the cattle are ""a-browzin', "" an' the Spanish ponies grow
Where the Northers ""come a-whistlin'"" and the ol' dust devils row
And the prairie dogs are sneezin', and a'freezin from the cold
Where the lonesome townie prairies melt into the airy stream
And the double mountains slumber in the heavenly kind of dreams
Where the antelope is grazin and the lonely plovers call
It was there that I attended ""The Cowboys' Christmas Ball.""

The music was a fiddle and a lively tambourine
And the big imported by stage from Amboline
And the room was togged out gorgeous-with mistletoe and shawls,
And the candles flickered frescoes, all around them airy walls.
And the women folk looked lonesome-the boys looked kinda treed,
Till the leader commenced to yellin': ""Hey boys, let's all stampede, ""
And the music started sighin', an' awailin' through the hall
As a kind of introduction to ""The Cowboys' Christmas Ball.""

Now their leader was a feller that came from Swenson's ranch,
They called him ""Windy Billy, "" from ""little Deadman's Branch.""
When he commenced to hollerin', ""Now, fellers stake your pen!
""Lock horns with all them heifers, an' russle 'em like men.
""Saloot yer lovely critters now swing an' let 'em go,
""Climb the grape vine 'round and round, boys let's do-ce-do!
""You Mavericks, join the round-up- skip her waterfall, ""
Huh! It was gettin' happy, The Cowboys' Christmas Ball

Now the boys was a little bit skiddish
The ladies was powerful to me
That big days finally music made us jumpin with both feet
That wailin' frisky fiddle, I never will forget
And windy ol' Bill kept singin' and I believe I hear him yet
Oh yes, boys, chasing squirrels, cut'em to the side
Doc' Hollis to the center, now cross Pete Charlie's bride
Turn around you gentle kittens, I wrote them that ol' song
Hey hittin was gettin' active at thee Cowboy's Christmas Ball

And the dust rose fast and furious, we all just galloped round
Till the scenery got so dizzy, a few ol'cow folks fell down
We buckled to our partners and told them to hold on
We shook our hooves like ryman until the early dawn

Don't tell me 'bout cotillions line dancin' no sire'ee!
That dancin' Anson City still takes the cake for me.
Now boys I won't forget ya, I often will recall
Oh no I won't forget it, that Cowboys' Christmas Ball.
