Darkness in Paradise

JULLIAN GOMES, SAMANTHA THORNHILL

Dear darkness
I am that candle in your cavity burning at both ends
My destiny's to defy gravity softening my ascent
You swallowed me like a pill but I am more feast then supplement
Cosmic culprit you inject your venom with a whisper, you shapeshift, slither
Without your face sons wouldn't know their places we'd be strangers to their shine you reveal them faithfully right, on right
Every sunset blows the whistle and slowly it grew in descendance

No matter how bright the day had been
I used to take for granted my gold until you swirled in and left me with nothing to hold
I stopped walking the sunny sides of streets my smiles grew slimmer fog hung its grey coats between my thoughts my celestial windows became dimmer
No matter how clear the sky that day you hovered like an umbrella
Yet somehow in my way, blocking my path, stopping my door, truncating my laugh that was before I knew we were at war
Now this is how I learn that the stars are bullet holes unsung profit shot the heavens to let us know that the infinite glow behind your twisted curtain is all that's real and for certain
Oh darkness I am that candle burning at both ends
My twin fires dance livid on this climb through your bowels within my ascension I rise through your illusions and limiting lies up this epic spiral for the blinding shores and skies
Of paradise
