Sleep Song
I know it ain't much
But it's all i can afford
Throw a blanket at my feet
And make a bed out of a floor
Close your tired eyes
Let a yawn out like a roar
Sleep will come to you
Like a ship upon the shore
The hard wood isn't soft
Like the arms of the one you keep
The only thing thats harsher
Is the morning you will greet
Full of half clear memories
And words you did not mean
Friends who you estranged
And strangers on whom you leaned
The glory of the morning
And breakfast with a friend
The way his mouth moves
When he starts to drink again
A cup of coffee
And a chestful of smoke
A lighthearted laugh
About a message that you wrote
If it was a little colder
You could wear a coat
And plant a seed of comfort
With water that would grow
I don't have the answers
To your questions dear
Everything i learned
I learned far away from here
And in due time when
I lay myself to die
I hope it's restful as
Sleep in wintertime
Sweeping dreams like
Snowbanks on a lake
A whispering wind
And the rain of yesterday
