A Moth to a Star

Aanisha Manzoor

A few years ago
I got drawn to a star
Like a moth
I couldn't stop clinging
To its light
I brought it into my universe
And pushed everything aside
To make it the shining center
My world then revolved around this star
But are moths colorblind
Because the star wasn't that bright
But I kept clinging on
Orbiting the dull star
Eventually the star's light faded out
The star was now a nebula
And I was a silly little moth
My universe was collapsing without its presence
But I knew, I knew
Once a star is dead
It can't return to its original state
Ever again
But I was a silly little moth
I hoped, I hoped
For its revival
For days
For weeks
For months and years
But the cracks in my universe only increased
And it only got darker
Until I met them
My world lit up immediately
A star so warm and bright
It melted the cracks back together
They walked into my universe and let me walk into theirs
I was no longer a moth
They made me feel like a star, too
And so much more
I don't really need this broken world anymore
So I'll open it up
And let the meteors fall
And kill the moth
Kill this world
Kill the me from before
Because I've moved onto a different universe
You let me in yours
When your light starts to fade
I'll lend you mine
Like you lent me yours
I have a feeling this world will last
And we'll live forever and more
