Heavy Mettle

Gerard Hammill, Richard Jankovich

Trying to say something meaningless with words on the roof of my mouth
Silence with that thick accent, the less said the more felt
She falls, curtains on a mediocre play
And her audience is unsure when to clap
To pause, to rewind, to come undone
To say nothing of the vice
You planned to go back and visit, but you hadn't planned the price

So I spend my days misspelling intentions, spitting up heroes, swallowing fame
Saying nothing with the right smile, stabbing gossip with the wrong fork
I write the answers on the back of my hand
The ink sets clean but the moment smears soon the pen will lay down and die
My paper will crumble and my mettle will sigh

There's got to be a better reason not to settle
There's got to be something more than heavy metal
