Slow Falling Snow

AMANDA ROSE SHIRES, PETER J. LEVIN

After the fire died,
And the presents were all untied,
Pretty ribbon, wrecked paper
Everywhere, I was so tired.
Could've left it til the morning
Could've left it all week.
The straightening up and cleaning
Would've waited for me.
Outside a slow falling snow.
I watched it swirl
Past the kitchen window.
I picked up the tinsel
on the floor, scattered leaves,
Candy wrappers in the cushions,
All the silver debris.
Could've waited till the morning
Could've waited all week.
But there's something in the quiet
Hours calling me.
Outside a slow falling snow
Swirled on down
Past the kitchen window.
The shapes of leaves
In the shape of a sparrow.
There he was handing me his coat,
Then oh I froze.
He put his hand on my shoulder
And I froze
At the sink I stood tears streaming,
I said I have missed you, you know-
It hasn't been easy.
Nothing much cheers me.
It hasn't been the same.
I've grown so weary.
I woke up at the counter.
Still slow falling snow.
Everything was so clean.
I was still wearing his coat.
